Extrait de la prochaine mixtape ‘OF Tape Vol. 2′ (20 mars) du collectif Odd Future.

Après quelques années plutôt discrètes Kev Brown continue sur la lancée de son projet ‘Alexander Green’ avec Kaimbr sortie l’année dernière, avec cette fois-ci une nouvelle association avec un des autres membres de son Low Budget Crew, Sean Born. Un album dont le beatmaker de Landover produit 10 des 15 morceaux, le reste étant confié à un mélange Low Budget/Mello Music Group très séduisant composé de Oddisee, Kenwood, Quatermaine et Dunc (DTMD). L’un des premiers projets du label MMG orienté vraiment très street life, mais on est loin de ces albums lambda glorifiant le crime et la violence à gogo, dans ce LP intitulé judicieusement ‘Behind The Scale’ Sean Born nous décrit l’autre côté de cette vie rarement plaisante qu’il connaît bien. Les titres des différents morceaux sont assez explicites et ne laissent pas vraiment de doute sur le contenu : ‘Go Hard’, ‘Murdaland’, ‘Take It & Run’ nous montrent les différents aspects et composantes d’un style de vie assumé et revendiqué avec en point d’orgue le grind anthem très réussie ‘Pluck Em Off’ concocté par Oddisee. Les autres beatmakers qui viennent épauler Kev Brown sont aussi à leur avantage sur ce projet, que ce soit l’excellent ‘DrugsAlcoholSex’ de Dunc ou les 2 beats de Kenwood avec le cinématique ‘Queen Anne’ et ce ‘Lights On’ de bonne facture.

Ce ‘Behind The Scale’ reste rythmé par les nombreux coups d’éclats de Kev Brown qui allume la mèche dès le début de cet opus avec le grandiose ‘Grandeur’ qui lance parfaitement cet album, dans un genre différent son ‘Skeez’ fait aussi des ravages mais que dire du ‘Bullshit’ et surtout du monumental ‘Pour Out Liquor’ placé logiquement en fin de projet, un premier et un dernier morceau qui justifient à eux tous seules l’association Sean Born/Kev Brown. Le offbeat du MC du Maryland rajoute un charme particulier à l’univers de ce projet au style très gritty années 90 qui n’est pas sans rappeler les gros albums de mon enfance sous fond de story telling dans la lignée d’un projet comme le populaire ‘Only Built 4 Cuban Linx’ de Raekwon. Très peu de featuring sur cet opus dont les différents morceaux ne dépassent quasiment jamais les 3 minutes 30, Kaimbr (‘DrugsAlcoholSex’) et Hassaan Mackey (grosse performance sur ‘Bullshit’) suffisent largement à alimenter cette saga urbaine, 2 artistes qu’on retrouve aussi sur le bonus track ‘12/12’ aux côtés de Toine. Sean Born nous offre avec son ‘Behind The Scale’ une plongée derrière l’envers du décor qui n’a rien d’inédit mais qui sur le fond et la forme (avec l’aide de Kev Brown) arrive à se démarquer de ce qu’on a déjà entendu un certain nombre de fois (clin d’œil, la version CD est elle aussi divisée en 2 parties: Side One et Side Two).
